Meet the BlackBox-i — the second evolution in our underdrive series, where ‘i’ stands for integrated. Built from the ground up, the BlackBox-i was engineered to be as short and compact as possible, making it the perfect fit for short-wheelbase vehicles like Jeeps, early Broncos, and rock buggies. To achieve this, we started with a completely clean slate.
Innovation
Breaking away from traditional gearbox design, we eliminated the typical male/female splined connection at the transfer case—cutting overall length by up to 4 inches. Rather than using a standard transfer case input shaft, we built its internal dimensions directly into the BlackBox’s main shaft. This breakthrough allows the BlackBox-i to fit inside and fully integrate with the transfer case, resulting in a much shorter, more efficient drivetrain assembly.
Dana 300 Compatibility
By replacing the input shaft and housing, the Dana 300 input gear splines directly onto the BlackBox-i output shaft, creating an ultra-compact setup just 5 inches long. Need to adapt to a different transmission? No problem — the BlackBox offers a wide range of input shafts to handle just about any setup with ease.
Bronco Dana 20 Compatibility
By replacing the factory’s long input shaft and bearing retainer, the 6-spline input gear mounts directly to the BlackBox output shaft. The result? A compact 5.188-inch gearbox assembly that’s not only shorter but also easily adaptable to a wide range of transmissions.
Atlas II – The Shortest Combo Yet
The BlackBox-i for the Atlas-II replaces the stock input shaft, along with the 1-inch thick bearing retainer and clocking ring—adding just 4 inches over the stock Atlas-II! It’s compatible with all gear ratios, as well as 6-spline, 32-spline, and the new 8-bolt 32-spline input gears, making it the most compact and versatile option available.
Hero 2 & 3 Speed Compatibility
The BlackBox-i for Hero 2 & 3 Speed transfer cases replaces the stock input shaft, along with the 1-inch thick bearing retainer and clocking ring—adding just 4 inches to the overall length. It’s compatible with all gear ratios, but the input assembly must be sent to us for gear installation.
Bonus: this setup transforms a 3-speed into a 6-speed system!
