Northwest Fabworks – Innovation in Motion Since 2005
At Northwest Fabworks, we’re committed to designing and manufacturing parts that our customers are just as proud to own as we are to make. Since 2005, we’ve poured our passion into the 4x4 industry, earning a reputation for unmatched quality, responsive support, and in-house manufacturing that keeps control and precision where it belongs—under our roof.
We first gained traction in the domestic transfer case market with our now-legendary BlackBox, EcoBox, and Titan Series product lines. Each one was engineered to improve handling and control through reliable, selectable gear reduction.
With success came the next challenge—bringing that same level of innovation to the Toyota off-road market. The result? The Eco-Crawler.
Why the Eco-Crawler?
For the Australian Market VF chain-drive equipped Toyota 4x4s were introduced in 1997. Dual transfer case options have traditionally been unreliable, overly complex, or simply unavailable. Most setups require outdated gear drive components, multiple adapters, and often resulted in a weak, excessively long, and failure-prone system.
We changed that.
How We Did It
Rather than repurposing outdated gear drive transfer case parts, the Eco-Crawler features a brand-new billet aluminum housing that accepts stock VF transfer case planetary gear sets.
-
Direct fit to the factory transmission—no shaft adapters or couplers needed
-
Precision CNC machined in-house for strength and exact tolerances
-
Purpose-built for Toyota platforms needing compact, reliable gear reduction
How It Works
To install the Eco-Crawler, you’ll need two VF chain-drive transfer cases.
-
Remove the planetary gear unit from the donor case that matches the Transmission Output
-
Install it into the Eco-Crawler billet housing
-
A custom NWF input shaft connects directly to your vehicle’s transfer case—no splined coupler required
What You’ll Need
-
A VF Chain-Drive Toyota Transfer Case to donate the planetary gearset
-
Note: Torsen-type VF transfer cases are NOT compatible as a Donor
-
Stock “J” shift-style levers (if not using NWF Trident Shifters)
-
“One-Touch” 2WD–4WD shifters are not compatible
What Eco-Crawler Type do you need?
- Right Hand Drop: Works for all Toyota Hilux manufactured from 08/1997 until 01/2005. All Chain Drive Cases in these model years will be Right Hand Drop and Forward Shift, but come in "J" Shift and "Hybrid" Shift (Push Button 4WD) styles. We supply new Shift Rails to convert Forward "J" Shift to top shift on one of the required cases. Note: Hybrid Shift can not be used as Transfer Case (only as a donor) Frame Codes: KZN165, LN167, LN172, RZN169, RZN174, VZN167 and VZN172
- Left Hand Drop: Works for all Toyota Hilux, FJ Cruiser and Fortuner from 02/2005 Until Present. These Chain Drive Cases will all be Left Hand Drop and come in Forward Shift, Top Shift and Electric Shift. Note: The Transfer Case used behind the Eco-Crawler must be Top Shift or Electric Shift. Frame Code: GGN25, GGN125, GUN125, GUN126, GUN156, GSJ15, KUN26
- Left Hand Drop Torsen: Works with the Land Cruiser Prado from 09/2002 until Present. These Chain Drive Cases will all be Left Hand Drop and have a Torsen Differential. They came as Top "J" Shift, Top "Hybrid" Shift, Forward "J" Shift, Forward "Hybrid" Shift and Electric Shift. Note: These Cases are NOT suitable as a donor for the Eco-Crawler. Note: The Transfer Case behind The Eco-Crawler must be Top Shift or Electric Shift. Frame Codes: GDJ150, GRJ120, GRJ150, KDJ120, KDJ150, KZJ120, RZJ120
- Conversion to Right Hand Drop: This Eco-Crawler will allow a Right Hand Drop Transfer Case to go behind a Transmission that normally had a Left Hand Drop Transfer Case. This is mainly used when swapping a newer Engine and Transmission into an Older Vehicle and want to maintain Right Hand Drop. Note: You will need the Left Hand Drop Transfer Case that came with the newer Transmission to be used as the donor to build the Eco-Crawler we will supply shift rails to convert the Forward Shift Right Hand Drop Transfer Case to Top Shift.
IMPORTANT:
- When mating an Eco-Crawler to a Left Hand Drop Transfer Case from the 6 Speed Manual, the input retainer must be shortened. The Outside O-Ring Groove will be your cut line.
